This allows reliable installations over many substrates — plywood\/OSB, concrete, gypsum, heated floors, etc. — and with its 3.5 mm thickness it reduces the total assembly thickness and level differences with adjacent coverings (carpet, engineered wood, vinyl). DITRA allows tile installation over single-layer plywood or OSB subfloors on joists spaced up to 19.2\" (488 mm) on centre.\n\nUncoupling: DITRA's open-rib structure creates a slip plane that compensates for differential movement between the substrate and the tile. This principle neutralizes stresses that typically cause cracks and delamination of the tiled surface.\n\nWaterproofing: the polyethylene composition provides a reliable moisture barrier in interior applications, protecting substrates that are often sensitive to water in modern construction.\n\nVapour management: channels under the mat form a free space that allows moisture and vapour from the substrate to escape, thereby reducing the risk of damage to the tile covering.\n\nSupport and load distribution: during installation, columns of mortar form in the mat cavities and transfer tile loads to the substrate. The mat remains virtually incompressible within the assembly, enabling the benefits of uncoupling without compromising point-load distribution.
